Projects and Clients

A selection of work undertaken, past and present.

Forestry Commission

Betty Dawes Wood in Dymock, Gloucestershire, and Leigh Woods in Bristol are FC-owned sites where Wye Coppice has cut beautiful poles in well-managed coppice, and brought hazel back into rotation. Dymock is well worth a visit to see the amazing wild daffodils in spring, which benefit hugely from the extra light provided by coppicing.

Natural Resources Wales

Since October 2021, Wye Coppice has been working on a number of woodlands in south-east Wales for NRW.

Work includes thinning, re-spacing and coppice restoration. This helps to diversify the age structure of woodlands, increases light reaching the understorey, and promotes biodiversity.

Woodland Trust

The Woodland Trust engaged us on a thinning and coppicing project at Priory Grove, Monmouth. This sloping site presented a number of challenges in working and extraction - while minimising our impact on the ground and local environment. The site has been fenced to permit regrowth.

Severn Rivers Trust

In collaboration with the Forestry Commission and Severn Trent, the Severn Rivers Trust engaged Wye Coppice on an interesting project at Linear Park, Cinderford.

We felled trees into the river to increase turbulence and change the shape of the river bed and banks. Interrupting the flow of the river with large woody debris may reduce the risk of flooding downstream, while varied river conditions promote biodiversity.

We're pleased to be part of this experiment into using nature based solutions to mitigate flooding and improve river habitat.

Gwent Wildlife Trust

Wye Coppice are pleased to have undertaken works for Gwent Wildlife Trust including removal of ash dieback-infected trees at Dixton Embankment, Monmouth, and ride clearance in Croes Robert.

Wye Valley National Landscape Partnership

We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the Wye Valley National Landscape and Welsh Government for awarding Wye Coppice grants through the Sustainable Development Fund. Since 2022, this support has enabled us to organise chainsaw qualifications for trainees, and offer on-the-ground experience on various sites.

The SDF funding also supports our free community programme, in which we share our passion for sustainable woodland management, its environmental benefits and related local products.

Goblin Combe

Near Bristol, we are working with the environmental charity Groundwork to manage the interesting woodlands at Goblin Combe - a limestone gorge offering stunning views across the Mendips. This 130-acre site includes an SSSI and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, so all operations are being undertaken with respect to these special features. We are addressing ash dieback and working to conserve the monument by removing scrub.

Combe Grove

Beyond our local area, we have been working in the woods attached to Combe Grove, a health and wellbeing retreat near Bath. The grounds - extending to 70 acres of woodland and meadow - are simply gorgeous, but the woods require some significant work to manage invasive species and address the problem of ash dieback. In addition to these essential works, we are halo thinning a number of impressive veteran trees to reveal their majesty.

Woodland Owners

Our skilled team have worked on numerous jobs for private clients, chiefly owners of small woodlands whose values align with our own. We advise on the principles of continuous cover forestry and how to increase biodiversity in woodlands, as well as works that can help to make woods safe and accessible.
