L-R: Wye Coppice trainees Jack, Jazmin, Olive and Will.

Trainees off to a great start

News    6 October 2023

We’re proud to say our four woodland management trainees have got off to a great start. Jazmin, Jack and Olive have completed their basic chainsaw training and passed their assessments, while ready-qualified Will has been working on the ground at several sites. We thank Wye Valley AONB Sustainable Development Fund for supporting these training placements.

Getting through the first month

Although it was a challenging week getting through the chainsaw course, everyone had positive things to say.

“It was intense, but good,” said Jack, 19, from Chepstow. “Some of my rugby friends are jealous of what I’m doing!”

Olive, another Wye Valley local, said the course was really helpful. “I had a base knowledge, but I’ve got a lot more confident,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to becoming more competent in felling and different cuts.”

As well as getting to grips with the technical know-how, the team have expressed real enthusiasm about learning more about woodland ecology and why management is worthwhile.

“I’m really happy to be part of this traineeship as I have a passion for nature and environmental sustainability,” said Jazmin, from Catbrook. “I wanted a practical entrance into the sector and I love being able to work in the outdoors and make a positive impact.”

Will, who lives in Bristol, told us he’s looking forward to learning more about tree ID, what species can be used for different products, and how to make charcoal.

“I’ve learnt so much already – it’s great being able to draw on everyone’s expertise,” he said about working with the Wye Coppice team.

High points and low points

Will was lucky enough to work on a natural flood management project – a high point in his first month, he said. However, he has also had an unpleasant experience, being stung when a tree was unknowingly felled on a wasps’ nest. Indeed, working outside can be tough – Jack admits he didn’t realise how physically demanding the job would be. The general feeling among the group is that expectations are being exceeded, though, with everyone really happy to be getting experience on their saws and discovering more about the woods.

Wye Coppice CIC would again like to thank Wye Valley AONB SDF for making this opportunity possible. The year-long traineeship is providing four people with on-the-ground skills in forestry work, while carrying out useful operations in local woods.
