Proud to be based in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, Wye Coppice is a Community Interest Company established to meet the need for sensitive woodland work in the lower Wye Valley and beyond. We undertake coppicing, coppice restoration and broadleaf woodland management to a high professional standard; we carry out surveys and research; we offer training placements, short courses and community events. We are working to make our woodlands thrive.
Coppicing involves cutting certain broadleaved tree species to ground level, then allowing the regrowth of multiple stems, before cutting again several years later. Hazel, oak and sweet chestnut are classic examples of trees that lend themselves to coppicing.
Coppiced wood can be used for a variety of products, offering a home-grown, renewable material, with no need to replant. Meanwhile, the light that reaches the forest floor after coppicing has a dramatic effect on this woodland habitat, increasing ground flora, insects and wildlife.
Archaeological evidence clearly shows that humans and wildlife have had an intimate relationship with coppice woodlands in the UK for at least 6,500 years. However, changes in forestry policy and land use, increased timber imports and availability of alternative materials, meant that the practice of coppicing declined from the early 1900s. Only a fraction of our once abundant, well-managed coppice woodlands now survive.
Wye Coppice is actively working to restore coppice for public and private landowners - and we want to spread the word about its benefits. Enhanced biodiversity, a local and renewable source of wood, rural employment and wellbeing - there are so many good things that coppice can provide. We are champions of this traditional method of woodland management.
